Lviv installs 38 elevators in homes to accommodate people with disabilities

Over several years, 38 lifts for people with disabilities were installed in residential buildings in Lviv. 5 of them were arranged this year alone.

The Lviv City Council reports this.

What is the problem?

When building new homes, hospitals, and other medical and administrative facilities, greater focus is being given to installing special elevators or lifts. This ensures that every citizen can access any building regardless of their health condition.

For a person with disabilities, a special device becomes the only safe and accessible alternative to stairs or even an ordinary elevator. It may seem strange, but for such citizens, using an elevator cabin can also be accompanied by certain risks.

As of 2023, 44 elevators will be installed in Lviv's residential buildings. However, given the full-scale war, their number may increase.

What is the solution?

According to the city council, since 2018, the "Program for ensuring the accessibility of residential premises for persons with disabilities in wheelchairs and persons with disabilities with visual impairment of the 1st group" has been operating in Lviv.

How does it work?

The city council says that within the framework of this program, 38 lifts have already been installed.

According to officials, the program undergoes annual modifications. Moreover, a new list of individuals with disabilities has been included in the program, requiring the installation of a ramp or lift in their homes.

"Before that, the monitoring groups formed in each district inspect the building, communicate with the resident – a person with a disability, and determine what elements of accessibility are technically possible to equip," said the Department of Housing and Infrastructure of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Last year, the program's work was suspended in connection with the martial law. At the beginning of 2023, 2 million hryvnias were allocated for installing 5 lifts – on Sosiura, Pasichna, K. Levytskyi, Katedralna, and Mazepa streets.

As reported, installing one lift costs the city approximately UAH 400-600 thousand.

The cost depends on:

  • platform height,
  • from the construction of the lift (inclined or vertical platform),
  • from the design of the stairwell (with or without platform rotation),
  • from the elevator control system (controlled from the venue or individual remote control).

As of now, three elevators have already been entirely installed. Two more are undergoing final installation work. Also, at the last session of the city council, another 3 million hryvnias were allocated for installing seven lifts.
