Slovakia halts military support to Ukraine following election results

After the election victory of the anti-Ukrainian Smer party, the interim government of Slovakia announced that it was suspending the provision of military aid to Ukraine.

Politico reports this.

"The bureaucratic government of Slovakia, which is resigning, will not send any more military materials to Ukraine," the government spokesman said.

At the same time, the Ministry of Defense of Slovakia is still considering the possibility of sending a new aid package.

On October 2, Slovak President Zuzana Chaputova asked former Prime Minister Robert Fico, who won the election, to try to form a coalition government. He has until October 16 to do this.

On September 30, local elections were held in Slovakia. The anti-Ukrainian Smer-SD party of former Prime Minister Robert Fico received the most votes.

At the same time, one of the leaders of Slovakia, former Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini, changed his opinion about military aid to Ukraine after the elections. He stated that Slovakia "has nothing more to send" to Ukraine.

Recently, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal talked with his Slovak counterpart Ludovit Odor. At the same time, the parties discussed the energy system and Bratislava's support for Ukraine in terms of electricity imports in the winter period.

In addition, Ukraine and Slovakia previously signed a contract to produce Zuzana 2 self-propelled guns.

Also, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is negotiating with the Croatian DOK-ING and Slovakian Way Industries regarding the localization of the production of mechanized demining machines in Ukraine.

The President of Slovakia, Zuzana Chaputova, said that Bratislava is ready to help Ukraine fulfill the requirements for full membership in the European Union as soon as possible.
