What is the problem?
As part of the second stage of the plan to provide a million artillery shells to Ukraine, the European Defense Agency (EDA) is negotiating contracts with European manufacturers to purchase of 155 mm shells and rockets.
At the beginning of September, EDA signed eight contracts with defense companies to provide Ukraine with 155-mm ammunition.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stressed that Ukraine was still acutely lacking artillery ammunition because of the intensive hostilities.
What is the solution?
Under the auspices of the European Defense Agency, Denmark has decided to allocate financing to purchase 155 mm artillery ammunition for Ukraine.
How does it work?
The Scandinavian country provided Kr. 100 million ($14 million) to deliver ammo during 2024.
"Denmark will facilitate more of joint purchases of munitions and remains willing to support Ukraine in the long term," the Danish defense minister said.
What we know about ammunition supply to Ukraine
Estonia first proposed the idea of EU member states jointly purchasing 155 mm artillery shells, which Kyiv desperately needed. The European Union supported this idea and pledged to provide Ukraine with one million artillery shells within 12 months.
The European Defense Agency took it upon itself to procure ammunition. The project will last over eight years, and each country will decide if they wish to contribute during each individual procurement.
The plan's first stage lasted from February 9 to May 31. At the time, €1 billion was set aside to reimburse EU member states for around half the cost of munitions provided from their arsenals.
The EU reported that the cost of the ammunition provided was €1.1 billion. AFP pointed out that EU money only reimbursed part of the cost, which showed that the measure fell short of its goal.
As Rubryka reported, the European Union has already delivered 223,800 shells and 2,300 missiles to the Ukrainian forces.
