EU Commission plans to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until 2025
The European Commission proposed to further extend the temporary protection for people fleeing Russia's aggression against Ukraine from 4 March 2024 to 3 March 2025.
The Commission proposal will now have to be adopted by the Council.
This will provide certainty and support for more than 4 million persons enjoying protection across the EU, says a press release.
The EU Temporary Protection Directive has been activated to house millions of refugees from Ukraine, being in effect until 2024.
Previously, the state's spokesman Piotr Mueller said that Poland is likely to cut financial support for Ukrainians who fled Russia's aggression
The support for refugees, which includes waiver of residence and work permit requirements, free access to schools, medical care and family benefits, will not be extended in 2024.
In the first half of 2023, the number of Ukrainian refugees abroad increased by 300-500 thousand people.
