United to win: Canada to provide Ukraine with $24 mln for air defense systems
Canada intends to allocate 33 million Canadian dollars (over 24 million US dollars) to purchase air defense systems for Ukraine.
The Minister of Defense of Canada, Bill Blair, stated this, according to The Guardian.
As the head of the Canadian defense department noted, the funds will be sent to the British-led partnership, which buys equipment for Ukrainian air defense to help Ukraine repel attacks by Russian missiles and drones.
The partnership, including the United States, the Netherlands, and Denmark, plans to purchase hundreds of short- and medium-range air defense missiles and related systems.
As Blair emphasized, this contribution is part of military aid to Kyiv worth 500 million Canadian dollars, which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in June this year.
For reference:
Since the Russian full-scale war against Ukraine began in February 2022, Canada has provided more than 8 billion Canadian dollars in aid. That amount also includes about C$1.8 billion in military assistance.
In addition, Canada transferred several of its Leopard 2 tanks to the Ukrainian army.
Canada is also involved in training the Ukrainian military as part of the UNIFIER operation. In particular, Canadian specialists teach Ukrainian combat medics. Since 2015, they have taught various skills to more than 37,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
In addition, Canada handed over Senator armored vehicles to the Ukrainian military and joined the coalition of states created to train Ukrainians on F-16 fighter jets.
