Since Russia began its full-scale war against Ukraine, over 9,600 civilians have been killed, and over 17,500 people have been injured.

Rubryka reports, citing the new report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The data includes reported civilian deaths and injuries in Ukraine due to hostilities following the large-scale Russian invasion from February 24, 2022, to September 10, 2023.

During this period, OHCHR recorded 27,149 casualties among the civilian population of the country:

  • 9614 were killed,
  • 17,535 were injured.

In the first ten days of September,  the UN recorded 292 Ukrainian civilian casualties:

  • 55 were killed (29 men, 21 women, one girl, as well as four adults, whose gender is still unknown),
  • 237 were injured (101 men, 77 women, seven boys, two girls, and 50 adults, whose gender is unknown).

The OHCHR highlights that the actual figures are much higher since "the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed, and many reports are still pending corroboration." This applies, for example, to Mariupol, Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk, where there are reports of numerous victims among the civilian population.

The UN does not recognize the genocide of Ukrainians

Recently, the chair of the UN Independent International Commission for the Investigation of violations in Ukraine, Erik Møse, stated that the organization still has not reached the conclusion that genocide is taking place in Ukraine.

According to him, the commission does not have sufficient evidence that would meet the legal qualifications of the Genocide Convention. At the same time, the UN special rapporteur on torture, Alice Jill Edwards, stated that the torture of Ukrainians by Russian security forces is part of the Kremlin's policy.

In June of this year, in a new report on human rights violations, the United Nations complained that citizens detained for allegedly helping the Russian invaders were allegedly "arbitrarily deprived of liberty" in Ukraine.
