Ukraine to bolster security of energy network with more Gepard systems from partners – Zelensky

Ukraine will receive more German Gepard air defense systems to protect the energy network.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this in an address to Ukrainians.

"I want to thank our partners – we have another agreement: Ukraine will receive more Gepards to protect our energy network. But we are mobilizing all our forces. To increase the supply of various air defense systems and the physical protection of facilities itself."

During the address, the President referred to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief Staff meeting, where Ukraine's energy stability was discussed above all.

"We are clearly aware that Russian evil is also preparing for winter – preparing to bear suffering. And now, everyone in the public sector and local authorities must do everything possible, and when necessary, even the impossible, so that Ukraine can survive the winter and maintain full functionality. Air defense, preparation of the energy sector, the social system, and relevant support packages from partners – all officials and commanders have clear tasks. The heads of regional administrations will report daily on the preparation every evening – a report for the government, the Office. The Minister of Internal Affairs is tasked with preparing the State Emergency Service sector as much as possible – not only what concerns the direct work of the Emergency Situations Service, but also clearly informing people about how protection will be provided," Zelensky said.

For reference:

During the 500 days of the full-scale war, half of Ukraine's energy sector was damaged by Russian shelling, and 271 hits to energy facilities have been recorded so far.

Since March 2022, Ukraine has received over 8,000 tons of humanitarian equipment from 31 countries.

Ukraine is also preparing for possible strikes on power plants in the fall since the Russians continue to produce missiles, and their previous campaign to destroy the Ukrainian energy industry did not achieve its goal.

We also reported that the new UNDP report indicates the continued vulnerability of the Ukrainian energy sector.
