United to win: Estonians donate to construct IDP shelter in Khmelnytskyi region

What is the problem?

By 2023, the Housing Cluster in Ukraine has set itself the goal of helping 207,708 IDPs in dire need of housing. But in 8 months, it was possible to help only 38% (78,450). With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the number of internally displaced persons in the Khmelnytskyi region increased by 20% (according to the "CHESNO" movement).

What is the solution?

At the request of the Mountain City MilitaryCivil Administration, a center for internally displaced persons was opened in the village of Solobkivtsi, Khmelnytskyi region (45 km away from the regional center), with the collaborative effort of the government and public organizations. The center was opened in the old polyclinic building. The Solobkivtsi village council previously repaired the premises, after which the center was equipped with furniture and household appliances by the "Salvation Angels" Charity Fund, which also invested in the project's logistics. The arrangement was made possible thanks to the generous donations from Estonian citizens to the Estonian organization "Mondo."

How does it work?

The shelter in the Khmelnytskyi region offers a safe space and psychological assistance for people who have lost their homes due to the war. With the agreement of the head of the Solobkivtsi village council, IDPs can live in the center until the end of the war and six months after its end. They do not need to pay for utilities and rent.

On Monday, August 21, the first residents will move into the premises. The shelter has ten rooms for 4-6 people and a kitchen, laundry, showers, and bathrooms.

In the future, the relocated Mountain City Military-Civil Administration of the Sieverodonetsk district of the Luhansk region will take care of the premises: they will deal with administration and maintenance issues.
