US and Ukraine begin negotiations for long-term security guarantees

In negotiations with Ukraine on long-term security commitments, the United States will focus on strengthening the armed forces for defense and deterring Russian aggression and on the transparency of institutions, the effectiveness of governance, and the implementation of reforms.

The US State Department stated this at the start of negotiations with Ukraine on security guarantees.

"Today, representatives of the State Department, the Department of Defense, and the National Security Council met with their Ukrainian colleagues to start negotiations on long-term obligations in the security field between the two countries," the message states.

At the same time, these obligations will focus on providing Ukraine with powerful forces capable of defending the country now and deterring Russian aggression in the future. It is envisaged to support and increase the efficiency and transparency of defense institutions and industry of Ukraine. Efforts will include strengthening reforms in Ukraine "that will promote the good governance necessary to advance its Euro-Atlantic aspirations."

The State Department noted that bilateral discussions occur within the limits defined by the G7 Joint Declaration on Support for Ukraine. This document seeks to officially "consolidate the permanent support of the United States to Ukraine, which defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity, rebuilds its economy, protects its citizens and strives for integration into the Euro-Atlantic community," the department clarified.

Ukraine reported on Thursday about starting negotiations with the USA regarding a bilateral agreement on security guarantees.
