Japan to assist Ukraine with modernization and restoration of irrigation systems

Japan plans to help Ukraine in the modernization and restoration of irrigation systems.

What is the problem?

Due to the full-scale invasion of Russia, the Russian occupiers subjected hundreds of hectares of agricultural land to heavy shelling and mining. The invaders also destroyed irrigation canals and irrigation systems.

In addition, as Rubryka wrote, the Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant.

Ukrhydroenergo stated that the Kakhovka HPP is completely destroyed and cannot be restored.

What is the solution?

A working meeting of representatives of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Agency for Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was held, where the issues of Japan's assistance for the modernization and restoration of irrigation systems in Ukraine were discussed.

How does it work?

The meeting was mainly about:

• modernizing and increasing the efficiency of operational irrigation systems,
• fixing non-operational systems when there's consumer demand,
• and providing technical and financial assistance to water user associations.

During the meeting, a detailed mechanism of cooperation with JICA was considered, and agreements were reached on providing the Japanese side with the necessary information and justifications for determining the priority of projects.

Odesa, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions were identified as the priority regions of Ukraine for the specified areas of work.

First, information will be prepared on projects in the Odesa region, particularly on the modernization and restoration of rice irrigation systems.

It should be noted that Ukraine received an additional 1.75 billion dollars from the World Bank and donors for emergency aid and recovery measures.
