Taiwan assists Ukraine with $2.5 mln in aid to build bridge in Kyiv

Taiwan's foreign ministry announced Wednesday it had pledged a donation of $2.5 million toward the construction of a bridge in the war-torn Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

The bridge will connect Obolonksy Island, a small island in central Kyiv, with the city, the ministry said in a press release.

It (the memorandum – ed.) also emphasizes the deep sense of friendship and compassion that the democratic community has for the Ukrainian people, the statement said.

Paris had previously allocated $1 mln for the Kyiv bridge. At the time, the Obolon district administration mentioned a different amount of donations from France, which equaled half a million dollars.

Taiwan understands the plight of the Ukrainian people. Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Taiwan, along with Western democracies, has strongly supported Ukraine and continues to provide humanitarian assistance to help it withstand the disaster, the ministry added.

The most concrete demonstration of Taiwan's support for Ukraine has come in the form of its commitments to humanitarian aid and refugee support.

Since the war's outset, the Taiwanese government and civil society organizations have committed more than $113.6 million in financial support, along with providing more than 700 metric tons of humanitarian supplies to Ukraine relief efforts. 

These aid packages have included humanitarian aid, in-kind humanitarian aid, refugee support, support for civil society groups, power stations, food assistance, and reconstruction aid, among others.
