Russian hackers expose confidential data on NATO summit preparations

On the evening of Wednesday, July 12, hacker group From Russia with Love, which is connected to Russia, published confidential information about preparations for the summit of the North Atlantic Alliance in Vilnius.

Lithuanian portal 15min reported this.

According to 15min, on the evening of July 12, hackers announced they had gained access to secret data on the organization of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

In particular, 29 files were revealed. They contain various information about the security of NATO leaders, multiple slides, presentations, protocols, software, and names of service members.

The leaked documents specifically state:

  • During the summit's preparation, 30 institutions and 346 "assets" located on the territory of Lithuania were checked. Of them, 23% fell into the "risk zone" with an unacceptable level of threat,
  • that the security was monitored by a sniper group of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Lithuania, the personal data of 17 employees are allegedly contained in the documents,
  • merged names of persons responsible for exchanging intelligence with NATO intelligence services in Lithuania and for modeling possible threats to the security of summit participants,
  • the alleged movement routes of the NATO delegations in Vilnius were published; in particular, specific routes and streets along which the convoys were allegedly moving were given.

Pro-Russian Telegram channels claim that the data leak allegedly took place in Ukraine.

The spokeswoman of the State Security Department of Lithuania, Aurelia Vernikaite, confirmed the hacker attack in a comment to 15min. According to her, the situation is known, and the incident is being investigated in cooperation with the relevant authorities.

For reference:

On the eve of the NATO summit in Lithuania on July 11-12, two cyberattacks were also recorded, due to which disinformation was broadcast on a regional radio station and in a shopping center after a music streaming service was hacked.

The NKSC did not provide details about the content of the disinformation, but according to BNS, it was directed against NATO and the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

"Both incidents disrupted the work of a third-party music streaming service, replacing the original playlist with disinformation," the department said.

It is noted that both cyberattacks were quickly detected, and the illegal broadcasts were stopped. These incidents are being investigated, and the police and other responsible authorities have been informed about them.

It should be noted that the government computer emergency response team of Ukraine CERT-UA monitors the activities of more than 80 hacker groups, most of which are groups from the Russian Federation, and 90% of their members are Russian military.
