Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina defeats top-ranked player to reach Wimbledon semi-finals
For the second time in her career, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has reached the Wimbledon semifinals, this time after defeating the world's number one, Iga Świątek.
Swiatek, a four-time major champion, won her third French Open title last month but was playing in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time.
Svitolina will next face Marketa Vondrousova for a spot in Saturday's final. It will be the Ukrainian player's second appearance in the Wimbledon semifinals. She lost to eventual champion Simona Halep at that stage in 2019.
This was the second match between Svitolina and Świątek, who has, up until now, won every match on the grass surface this season. In May 2021, Świątek defeated Svitolina in two sets at a tournament in Rome.
Svitolina has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time; the first was during this year's French Open, when she lost and was eliminated. Before her match with Świątek, Svitolina lost only two sets in four matches in this year's Wimbledon.
