89% of Ukrainians want to see Ukraine in NATO

The vast majority of Ukrainians are in favor of Ukraine joining NATO.

The survey results of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted from May 26 to June 5 show that 89% of Ukrainians want to see Ukraine as part of NATO.

The KIIS stressed that the absolute majority supports this step in all regions: from 79% in the East to 93% in the West. 

"At the moment, society has finally consolidated on this issue and demonstrates a unified view," the KIIS reports.

At the same time, for only 18%, it will be acceptable to refuse to join NATO to establish peace, and for 76% of the respondents, such a price is unacceptable.

Sociologists note that they also see a consensus view in the regional dimension: from 67% in the East to 81% in the West, Ukrainians consider such a concession unacceptable to establish peace.

The KIIS also compared how the attitude of Ukrainians to receiving security guarantees instead of joining NATO has changed. In May 2022, 39% insisted on only joining NATO, and 42% considered it acceptable to receive "security guarantees" instead.

By May 2023, public opinion has changed significantly. The share of those who insist on NATO membership has increased to 58%. At the same time, the percentage of those for whom "security guarantees" would be acceptable decreased to 29%. Sociologists emphasize that those who insist on joining NATO prevail in all regions.

The study lasted from May 26 to June 5. 1,029 Ukrainians over the age of 18 who live in the territories under the control of the Ukraine government were interviewed by telephone interviews. The error under normal circumstances does not exceed 3.4%. The KIIS conducted another poll during May 10-21 with Two thousand five hundred nine people interviewed by telephone. The error under normal circumstances does not exceed 2.4%.
