Netherlands’ House of Representatives recognizes Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainian people

President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the House of Representatives of the Netherlands for recognizing the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

He wrote on Twitter that he welcomed the recognition of the Soviet man-made famine as genocide by the Dutch parliament.

"Calling things by their proper name is the key to justice. And to preventing the recurrence of these horrific crimes. Grateful to the Netherlands for strong and multifaceted support of Ukraine in the fight for our future and that of all free world!" Zelensky said.

Background

The Holodomor, derived from the Ukrainian "морити голодом" or  "to kill by starvation"), was a man-made famine by the Soviet Union government from 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of Ukrainians. A joint statement to the United Nations signed by 25 countries in 2003 declared that 7–10 million died.

Already 27 countries have recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. Most recently, on June 28, Croatia recognized the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Slovakia recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people on June 20. In December 2022, the President of Ukraine called on the European Parliament to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of Ukrainians.
