Four Ukrainian athletes set national record, advancing to second round of Wimbledon 2023

Four Ukrainian women reached the second round of Wimbledon 2023 at once: tennis players set a national record.

In 2023, five Ukrainian women started in the main draw of Wimbledon:

• Anhelina Kalinina,
• Marta Kostiuk,
• Lesia Tsurenko,
• Elina Svitolina,
• Kateryna Baindl.

They all represent Ukraine in the top 100 of the world ranking.

According to the results of the first day of the competition, Lesia Tsurenko and Elina Svitolina advanced to the second round.

Both beat American Claire Liu and Venus Williams, respectively.

Instead, Kateryna Baindl lost to the US Open finalist in 3 sets and eventually became the only Ukrainian woman who did not make it past the first round.

After all, Marta Kostiuk, who won her first victory over a tennis player from the top 10, and Anhelina Kalinina, who beat Grand Slam debutant Jessica Buzas Maneiro, advanced to the second round.

The number of female tennis players in the second round of Wimbledon before now was a record-breaking three women.

In the fourth round, the woman from Odesa beat the best tennis player of the Russian Federation, Daria Kasatkina (No. 9 WTA).

It should be noted that earlier Elina Svitolina defeated the Russian Anna Blinkova and refused to shake her hand after the victory. Tennis player Marta Kostiuk did the same, refusing to greet Belarusian Aryna Sobolenka.
