Russian rocket strikes apartment building in Ukraine’s western city of Lviv: four civilians killed, 34 injured

On Thursday night, July 6, during a large-scale air raid warning announced in Ukraine, a Russian missile attack struck the western city of Lviv. The city is 1000 km from the front line and 70 km from the Polish border.

According to initial reports, the Russian troops fired Kalibr missiles from the Black Sea at the city. The attack led to victims: both killed and wounded. The explosions in Lviv were reported around three o'clock in the morning. There were several of them, as the city and region's air defense was activated to stop the attack. The command of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the repeated explosions were the result of the actions by air defense.

After some time, the local authorities reported the damage to the critical infrastructure object and the apartment building. Emergency services went to the scene. Work is being carried out to dismantle the rubble under which people are trapped.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that, as of 7:00 a.m., four civilians were killed. Another 34 people were injured. Employees of the State Emergency Service rescued seven people and evacuated 64.

According to the head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, Maksym Kozytskyi, there was a fire at the place where the rocket debris fell, which was promptly extinguished. The Russian attack damaged the apartment building: the 3rd and 4th floors in two entrances were destroyed.

Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi reported that an operational headquarters is working on the scene, and citizens are preparing for evacuation. The mayor also called the current attack "the biggest attack on the civil infrastructure of Lviv since the beginning of the full-scale invasion."

"There are dead and wounded. More than 50 homes have been destroyed. Emergency workers continue to clear the rubble," he wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the missile attack on Lviv. The Ukrainian leader published a video on his Telegram channel from the scene of the tragedy.

"Lviv. Consequences of the night attack of Russian terrorists. Unfortunately, there are wounded and dead—my condolences to the relatives. There will be a response to the enemy. It is tangible," Zelensky wrote under the footage.
