Ukrainian government allocates funding to rebuild hospitals most damaged by war

The Ukrainian government will rebuild 13 medical institutions in the regions most affected by Russia's war.

The Ministry of Health reports that the reconstruction will be funded with the help of subvention from the state budget.

What is the problem?

The Russian army has damaged or destroyed 1,554 medical facilities in Ukraine in more than 15 months since the start of the full-scale invasion.

A new investigation published by human rights investigators reveals that Ukraine's health system suffered 707 violent Russian attacks on hospitals, health workers, and medical infrastructure during the first year since Russia's full-scale invasion. The report titled "Destruction and Devastation: One Year of Russia's Assault on Ukraine's Health Care System" says, on average, Russia conducts two daily attacks on health care, including hospital bombings, medics' torture, and ambulances being shot at.

What is the solution?

"The government allocated more than 6.6 billion hryvnias for reconstruction projects from the fund to eliminate the consequences of the Russian armed aggression. These are schools, kindergartens, medical institutions, residential buildings, construction and reconstruction of water mains and sewers, heating networks, drilling of artesian wells, etc.," the statement reads. "Part of the funds will be directed to restore and repair 13 medical facilities of various profiles in the regions most affected by the war and flooded regions after Russia's destruction of the Kakhovka dam."

How does it work?

The subvention will be used to rebuild seven medical facilities in the frontline Kharkiv region, two in the Zhytomyr region, three in the Mykolaiv region, and one in the Odesa region.

Five outpatient clinics of general practice, namely, family medicine in the Kharkiv region, the public non-commercial enterprise of the Kharkiv Regional Council "Regional Children's Clinical Hospital No. 1" and the center of primary medical and sanitary care of the Derhachi City Council, will be rebuilt with this funding.

The Zhytomyr Regional Children's Clinical Hospital of the Zhytomyr Regional Council will be rebuilt in the Zhytomyr region.

In the Mykolaiv region, the psychoneurological department of the Mykolaiv Regional Mental Health Center of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, the treatment building of the Bashtanka multidisciplinary hospital, the cardiology department of the City Clinical Hospital No. 11 and the polyclinic B-2 Bashtanka interdisciplinary hospital.
