EU's top diplomat offers to create Ukraine Defense Fund
To ensure sustainable and long-term support for the Ukrainian people, the European Peace Fund, which currently finances military support for Ukraine, may be worth turning into the Ukraine Defense Fund.
EU High Representative Josep Borrell told journalists ahead of the European Council meeting in Brussels, Ukrinform reports.
"We must make Ukraine capable of defending itself. The European Peace Fund for Ukraine should perhaps become the Defense Fund of Ukraine," he said.
According to Borrell, the EU's security commitments to Ukraine should include the allocation of the subsequent tranches of aid and efforts in the long term "during and after the war."
He also emphasized the need to continue training Ukrainian soldiers and modernize the Ukrainian army.
As reported, on June 29, a two-day EU summit begins in Brussels; the first item on the agenda will be the situation in Ukraine. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky will participate in the EU summit via videoconference.
