Poll: Over 80% of Ukrainians consider themselves free people

During a sociological survey, the majority of Ukrainians confirmed that they believe themselves to be free people: compared to 2021, the share of such citizens increased from 62% to 84%.

According to sociologists, respondents were offered to choose what is more important — freedom or equality:

• 75% of respondents chose freedom (in 2022, 71%; in 2020, 64%).

But if one chooses between freedom and security, Ukrainians often choose security (54.5%) over freedom (44%).

However, the choice to favor security is significantly less than in 2020, when 66% of Ukrainians preferred security. The number reduced despite a large-scale war in Ukraine, and the urgency of the security issue increased tremendously.

When one needs to choose between freedom and prosperity, the choice of freedom by Ukrainians is constantly increasing, even in May 2023: the share of the former increased to 51%, and the latter decreased to 23%.

In 2010, the shares of those who preferred freedom and those who chose prosperity were approximately equal (32% and 30%, respectively)

The survey was conducted from May 23 to 31, 2023, by the Razumkov Center within the MATRA program project, financed by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine.

A total of 2,020 respondents over the age of 18 were interviewed. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%. At the same time, the systematic deviations of the sample may be caused by the consequences of Russian aggression, particularly the forced evacuation of millions of citizens.

As Rubryka reported, 73% of Ukrainians support renewing the central government at one level or another, and most respondents want changes in the Verkhovna Rada.
