EU Parliament calls on NATO to invite Ukraine to join the alliance
On June 15, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine, calling on NATO allies to provide quick accession to the Alliance.
EU members are urging NATO to uphold its commitment to Ukraine and facilitate the inclusion of Kyiv in the defense alliance, press service reports.
The resolution received 425 votes in favor, 38 against, and 42 abstentions.
EU deputies expect that the "process of accession should commence once the war concludes and reach its conclusion without delay."
Before attaining full membership, the EU, along with NATO allies, will collaborate closely with Ukraine to establish a temporary security framework. It should be promptly implemented after the war.
The Parliament underscores that Ukraine's integration into both NATO and the EU would bolster regional and global security while strengthening the ties between Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic community.
The resolution condemns Russia's destruction of the Kakhovka dam, stressing that this is a war crime that caused great damage to the environment. Deputies state that those responsible for other war crimes must answer for their actions in accordance with international law.
Part of the resolution is devoted to the reconstruction of Ukraine. MEPs call on the EU to create a comprehensive package for Ukraine that would take into account immediate, mid-term, and long-term needs.
Deputies emphasize the importance of combining the reconstruction of Ukraine, its European integration steps, and other reforms.
They note that it is important during the reconstruction to create a better infrastructure than the one that was destroyed.
EU must take into account the policy of the European Green Deal so Ukraine turns into an "emission-free and digitalized modern European general welfare state with a market economy."
Previously, NATO Secretary General said that talks on the model of Ukraine's movement towards the alliance are ongoing.
The Ukraine-NATO Council is among the formats of cooperation expansion that are being discussed. At the same time, Ukraine's foreign minister stressed that the establishment of this body without membership prospects is like a "tank without a gun."
