Odesa’s Black Sea water becoming fresher due to Kakhovka Dam destruction – survey

The consequent destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station by Russian invaders has resulted in a sharp decrease in salinity in the Black Sea, creating fresher water in the Odesa region.

The State Environmental Inspection of the South-Western district reported that.

On June 10, inspection experts took seawater samples in Odesa in Nova Dofinivka (berth № 243), on Lanzheron Beach and the 16th station of Velykyi Fontan.

• Nova Dofinivka (berth №243): suspended substances (an indicator characterizing the number of impurities) – an excess of 1.6 times; iron – 9 times; salinity is 2.7 times lower than normal;
• Lanzheron: iron – an excess of 5.2 times; salinity is 2.9 times lower than normal;
• 16 station of Velykyi Fontan: suspended substances – an excess of 1.1 times; iron – 3.4 times; salinity is 2.9 times lower than normal.

According to experts, in three places near Odesa, it was recorded that the salinity of seawater is several times lower than the norm.

It should be noted that in the Odesa region, due to the appearance in the sea of garbage and explosive objects brought by the Dnipro after the Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant, residents were urged to refrain from visiting the Black Sea coast.

As Rubryka wrote, on the night of June 6, Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, located a few kilometers from the temporarily occupied city of Nova Kakhovka, Kherson region.

It should be noted that the water level in Kherson has dropped by more than a meter as of June 10.

At the same time, in the Kherson region, the Inhulets River exceeded the permissible level of harmful substances.

Later it became known that swimming in reservoirs, fishing, and consuming fish in the Kherson region became forbidden.

More than 180,000 animals, including 160,000 birds and over 20,000 wild animals, were threatened with extermination due to the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP caused by the Russians.

According to the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Mykola Solskyi, farmers will not be able to fully use 1-1.5 million hectares of agricultural land due to the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP.
