Ukraine’s Kakhovka reservoir has already lost 70% of its water – environmental ministry

As of the morning of June 11, the reservoir lost almost 13.95 cubic km of water, which is 70% of its volume, after Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP). 

Rubryka reports, referring to Ukraine's Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.

Experts report that they recorded a decrease in the Dnipro River's water level below the Kakhovka HPP's destroyed dam.

So, at the Kherson mark, it has decreased by almost 1.5 m and is 4.2 m. On average, the trend of lowering the level by 1-5 cm per hour per day is maintained. Experts emphasize that the water level in the reservoir in the Nikopol area is 9.35 m.

Also, the Ministry of Environment emphasizes that in the area of the Nizhniodniprovskyi Nature Park, the water has risen by 20 cm compared to the indicators for June 10.

The shallowing of the water area in the Kamianska Sich National Park continues by more than 7 meters.

"Specialists of the State Environmental Inspectorate and the State Water Agency are taking water samples in places where possible. According to the results of laboratory studies, the content of petroleum products in the Dnipro water and the water of the Inhulets River does not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations," the statement summarized.

After the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP, the Black Sea began to desalinate, and the salinity of the water near Odesa was almost three times lower than usual.

As Rubryka reported, after garbage and explosive objects brought by the Dnipro River after the Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant started to appear in the sea, residents in the southern Odesa region were urged to refrain from visiting the Black Sea coast.

One hundred sixty thousand birds and more than 20,000 wild animals are at risk of death due to the Russian destruction of Kakhovka HPP.

The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Mykola Solskyi, says farmers will not be able to fully use 1-1.5 million hectares of agricultural land due to the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP.
