Mykolaiv takes action with two evacuation collection points for Kherson residents fleeing flooding from Kakhovka dam destruction

Evacuation

Mykolaiv, Ukraine's southern city and Kherson neighbor, is preparing to meet and help residents of the Kherson region, evacuating after the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station dam.

Rubryka reports, referring to the Telegram of Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkovych.

What is the problem?

On the night of June 6, the Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, located a few kilometers from the temporarily occupied city of Nova Kakhovka, Kherson region.

As a result of the dam's destruction, the water in the Kakhovka reservoir began to fall rapidly, threatening to flood.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine announced the beginning of the evacuation of the civilian population from potential flooding zones on the right bank of the Dnipro River, namely: the villages of Mykolaivka, Olhivka, Lvove, Tiahinka, Poniativka, Ivanivka, Tokarivka, Prydniprovske, Sadove, and partially the city of Kherson – Korabel Island.

Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson regional military administration, said that as a result of the Russian occupiers blowing up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, eight settlements and one micro-district of Kherson were entirely or partially flooded.

What is the solution?

Mykolaiv will first receive evacuees from the Kherson region in new evacuation points.

How does it work?

"Mykolaiv set up two gathering points: the railway and bus stations. Whoever travels by transport, like evacuation buses, trains, or their transport, will be assisted at these points," said Sienkovych.

As the head of the city reported, the residents of Kherson will be evacuated from Mykolaiv to other regions of Ukraine.

Sienkovych also called on the residents of the Kherson region to take care of their pets during the evacuation.

"Open the cages, untie the dogs, let the cats and other animals out. I am sure that in every city representatives of the local authorities and animal protectionists will help you with animals. Don't leave animals in danger," he stressed.

Ukrzaliznytsia Railways organized an evacuation train at 12.00 for people in danger due to Russia's destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

The Vostok-SOS team also helps to evacuate the less mobile population groups. At this time, the crews of the initiative have already left for the Kherson region. They are preparing to evacuate people who cannot reach mass evacuation points alone.
