EU boosts Ukraine’s recovery with €50 mln for temporary bridges

The Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine will receive an EU grant with the European Investment Bank's (EIB) support.

The state agency reported on Facebook that an over-50-million package will be used for temporary bridges to restore mobility.

What is the problem?

In December of last year, Andrii Ivko, the deputy chair of the Ukravtodor, the agency within Ukraine's Ministry of Infrastructure that oversees the roads in Ukraine, reported that Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine damaged or destroyed more than 25,000 kilometers of highways and 340 artificial structures.

What is the solution?

The EIB, the EU Bank, and the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine signed a grant agreement on allocating more than €50 million.

How does it work?

The reconstruction agency will use the grant funds to purchase temporary bridges, which will increase the mobility of the Ukrainian population.

These bridges will help Ukraine overcome the problems that have arisen due to Russian attacks, in particular by improving Ukrainians' access to essential services and necessary assistance.

The EIB will provide Ukraine with EU grant funds available within the European Union's Neighborhood Investment Platform, which before the war were intended to support the implementation of the EIB loan agreement on transport links in Ukraine.

This grant complements the packages of Emergency Solidarity Measures from the EIB, prepared in cooperation with the European Commission as an urgent measure to support Ukraine.

The measures provide €2.3 billion of emergency aid to Ukraine, of which €1.7 billion were already paid in 2022 for critical infrastructure needs to ensure the country's vital activities.
