Solutions to win: US allocates $118 mln to purchase Gepard air defense systems for Ukraine – Pentagon

The United States has awarded a more than $118 million contract for the purchase and delivery of Gepard 35mm air defense systems as part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

The Gepard guns will contribute to strengthening Ukraine's air defense system as the country prepares for its long-awaited counteroffensive. the US Defense Department said in a press release.

What is the problem?

Ukraine needs a large amount of resources to defend its troops and civilians from missile assaults. Russia has repeatedly warned against further escalation leading to the United States and NATO's direct involvement in the conflict.

What is the solution?

"Global Military Products Inc, Tampa, Florida, was awarded a $118,375,740 firm-fixed-price contract for the purchase and delivery of Gepard 35mm air defense systems," the release said on Wednesday the statement says.

How does it work?

Work will be performed in Jordan, with an estimated completion date of May 30, 2024.

Ukraine has received 52 refurbished Gepard systems from Germany amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The US announced a new package of security assistance for Ukraine worth $300 million, including artillery, anti-armor capabilities, and ammunition, as well as tens of millions of rounds of small arms ammunition.

The US government has committed military aid worth $38.3 bln since the beginning of Biden's administration in 2021. The delivery of Gepard tanks announced on 31 May, is the latest military support package for the country that Russia is currently bombarding.
