Ukraine’s Chernihiv cultural sites to be included in UNESCO heritage list

Ukraine's northern Chernihiv region will be restored together with UNESCO.

The war-torn city's cultural landscape will acquire the status of world heritage, UNESCO reports.

The decision was approved after the meeting of Ukrainian officials with Chiara Bardeschi, head of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine in Chernihiv. They discussed the comprehensive restoration of the region and cooperation with UNESCO experts.

The following sites of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Ancient Chernihiv" will be included in the "Cultural Landscape of Chernihiv" nomination:

• the complex of the historical center, the former city fortress with all the buildings (territory Chernihiv Val (the Rampart),
• Yelets Mountain with the assumption monastery and the Black Grave burial mound.
• The Boldyn Mountains with the 10-century burial mound and the complex of Troitsko-Illinsky Monastery.

Comprehensive community restoration programs are actively being developed in 10 regions, while in five regions, communities are just beginning this process.

The creation of restoration programs is essential for rebooting the economy in communities affected by Russian military aggression and for the return of Ukrainians to their homes, the minister emphasized.

At the beginning of 2023, the historical center of Chernihiv was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Out of 143 educational institutions in the Chernihiv region that were affected by armed aggression and shelling, 70 have been fully restored, while repair work is currently underway in 34 institutions.
