Kyiv mayor urges Germany to provide Ukraine’s wounded troops with free treatment in Berlin

Kyiv's mayor Vitalii Klitschko sent a letter to the newly elected mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, seeking assurances of free treatment for Ukrainian soldiers in the capital.

Klitschko noted that some 250-500 Ukrainian troops would need treatment each month for lost limbs, Politico reports.

At least some of these patients could certainly be cared for in your city in view of the special expertise of the clinics in Berlin — but at present it will unfortunately not be possible to reimburse the costs in your city, he wrote in his two-page letter.

Germany has pledged that wounded Ukrainian civilians, and military personnel will have unbureaucratic and quick access to high-quality medical care. However, there is still uncertainty regarding financial issues.

It is not always certain for us that Germany will cover the treatment costs for our soldiers who come to Germany for treatment of the consequences of complex war injuries. We need… a pragmatic and secure clarification of the financing by Berlin and Germany, the mayor said.

The mayor of Kyiv also advocated the "intensification of friendly relations between the two capitals in the direction of twinning." He added that he would be very happy if Kyiv and Berlin could use the example of military hospitals to "develop future partnership and present it to the outside world."

Ukraine's defense ministry has already developed a website for injured Ukrainian servicemen.
