“We are only safe today thanks to Ukraine” – Moldova’s president

It is possible that the Russian Federation could launch an offensive against Moldova following the annexation of Ukraine. Should this become a reality, Moscow would continue its expansion, with Chisinau becoming its potential next target.

Maia Sandu, the president of Moldova, which neighbors Ukraine, stated this in an interview with the Financial Times.

The Moldovan leader said she did not believe the Russian invaders would stop at the border.

Sandu asserts that the Ukrainian people sustain Moldova's safety, the government's stability, and the Ukrainian Defence Forces' heroic actions.

" We are only safe today thanks to Ukraine," the President of Moldova emphasized.

The leader of the neighboring country said that in the first weeks of the full-scale Russian aggression when such a threat still existed, the country focused on accepting refugees from Ukraine.

Journalists also asked Sandu whether she planned to leave Moldova in case of an attack by Russia. To which the president of Moldova said: "No."

"I would have stayed, but we counted on the fact that we would have to help as many of our people as possible to move to a safe place, which is Romania," the president added.

According to the head of state, the Kremlin is trying to restore the USSR by aggression against Ukraine.

"And we don't want that. Moldova was part of the buffer zone for 30 years, and for us, it meant poverty, corruption, bad governance, and emigration. We want to be part of the democratic world," she emphasized.
