Ukraine plans to build over 30 green biomethane plants

Ten corporations presented the Ukrainian Gas Transportation System Operator with an offer to construct more than thirty biomethane plants.

Rubryka writes about this, referring to the company's Facebook page.

What is the problem?

The war greatly damaged the Ukrainian gas transportation system, resulting in the destruction of energy facilities in numerous regions of the country. The recovery process is lengthy, and acquiring new equipment is highly expensive.

Furthermore, Ukraine does not export gas from Russia to the European Union, and these gas distribution systems have been repurposed for other operations.

In addition, Ukraine strives to meet European Union (EU) membership requirements and thus must consider mechanisms to improve the environment, conserve natural resources and decrease air emissions. This includes the rejection of fossil fuel use and the exploration of alternative sources of energy.

Ultimately, our nation possesses immense bioenergy potential. The technology developed by our researchers allows us to combat three issues simultaneously: decrease CO2 emissions, adequately manage biowaste, and drastically lower energy costs.

What is the solution?

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy believes that the development of the biomethane industry will make it possible to abandon the import of gas, which will contribute to the country's energy security and ensure energy decentralization.

And it will solve three problems at once:

  • reducing CO2 emissions,
  • disposal of bio-waste,
  • a significant reduction in the price of energy.

It is noted that the Gas Transportation System Operator of Ukraine has been systematically working with the government, the Verkhovna Rada [the Ukrainian parliament – ed.], businesses, and potential investors regarding biomethane projects for several years in a row.

"The company takes this sector into account in the development of the Gas Transportation System Operator plans and is already ready to provide biomethane transportation services," the message emphasizes.

How does it work?

So far, more than ten companies have applied to the Gas Transportation System Operator of Ukraine.

They are considering the construction of the 31st biomethane plant with a capacity of 225 million cubic meters. m per year.

The agency added that successfully positioning Ukrainian biomethane on EU markets requires a detailed and balanced approach. Its purpose is to develop mechanisms for cross-border trade in biomethane, in particular, removing barriers to the sale of biomethane transported by the gas transportation system in EU countries.

"In addition, for the development of the industry, it is necessary to create additional financial instruments for cross-border lending, which can be used, in particular, to fully or partially cover the manufacturer's costs for connecting to networks," Dmytro Lippa, General Director of the Gas Transportation System Operator of Ukraine, added.

For reference:

Biomethane, a form of ecological gas, is produced from waste products such as food industry waste, animal husbandry waste, sewage sludge, and the organic fraction of household waste.

Due to its large area of agricultural land, Ukraine has the potential to produce up to 10 billion cubic meters of biomethane annually, which is equivalent to a third of Ukraine's pre-war gas consumption. The Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Cherkasy, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk regions are deemed to have the greatest potential for biomethane production.

As a reminder, Energoatom and the Canadian energy company Cameco, one of the world's leading producers of natural uranium, have entered into two agreements to ensure a steady supply of nuclear fuel.

Additionally, it has been reported that Cameco has extended assistance to Ukrainian nuclear personnel.
