Denmark donates three kilometers of polyethylene pipes to restore Mykolaiv water main

The Kingdom of Denmark has provided support for the delivery of a variety of polyethylene pipes with a nearly three-kilometer length to the Mykolaiv regional center.

"Mykolaivvodokanal" City Communal Enterprise reports this on Telegram.

What is the problem?

It should be noted that the central water supply was damaged last year during the hostilities when Russia was planning to capture Mykolaiv. The city was left without water.

After the liberation of Kherson, specialists of the "Vodokanal"(water utility) surveyed half of the Dnipro-Mykolaiv water pipeline section, more than 36 km.

Damage of varying degrees was recorded in four places. There was also damage to the pumping station where water is taken.

Over time, the supply was replenished by drawing from the river with increased salinity. The water currently provided to residential dwellings is highly corrosive in composition and quickly deteriorates pipelines.

What is the solution?

"I am grateful to Denmark for the decision to take part in restoring the city of Mykolaiv with other international partners. I am sure that this will become the basis for attracting large and medium-sized Danish businesses to implement infrastructure projects in Ukraine," said the head of the Ukrainian government.

How does it work?

"Today, another batch of new polyethylene pipes of different diameters, almost 3 kilometers, arrived. The help came thanks to the active support of our city and region by the Kingdom of Denmark," the message emphasized.

However, specialists will need more than one year to overcome all the consequences and install hundreds of kilometers of new networks in the city.

The regional center became the only city in Ukraine and the world where salt water from the Dnipro-Buzka estuary began to be supplied to the system.

In April 2022, russian terrorists destroyed a water pipeline running through the then-occupied territory of the Kherson region and a water supply pumping station, wrecking the water supply line for the city of Mykolaiv. Mykolaiv's administration came up with a partial solution: pump salt water from the estuary, filter it, and run it through the water grid.

Saltwater destroys the city's networks slowly. During the past year, more than 1,000 leaks had to be eliminated. Repair crews are still working 24/7.
