US announces new military aid package for Ukraine

The White House announces a new military aid package for Ukraine which includes additional ammunition.

This is the 36th aid package worth $325 million for strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities, the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, says.

Today, the Biden-Harris administration will announce a new package of security support for Ukraine as part of our ongoing efforts to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's brutal invasion, the White House spokesperson said.

Relevant statements will be made by the US State Department and the Ministry of Defense. The package will include additional ammunition, missiles for HIMARS systems, anti-tank weapons, and other assistance.

The United States will continue to work with our allies and partners to help Ukraine protect itself, protect its democracy, and protect its people, Jean-Pierre emphasized.

The US Department of Defense has published the list that will be included in the new aid package:

  • additional ammunition for HIMARS;
  • 105mm and 105mm artillery shells;
  • heavy anti-tank guided missiles (TOW);
  • AT-4 anti-tank grenade launchers;
  • anti-tank mines;
  • explosive munitions for clearing obstacles;
  • more than 9 million cartridges for small arms;
  • 4 vehicles of material and technical support;
  • high-precision aviation ammunition;
  • test and diagnostic equipment for maintenance and repair of vehicles;
  • equipment for the security of ports and harbors;
  • spare parts and other field equipment.

On April 4, the US revealed details of $2.6 billion in new military aid for Ukraine to assist the country in its war against Russian forces. About $500 million of the package is to be drawn from US stockpiles, while the remaining $2.1 billion is to come in the form of Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) funding, which pays for the procurement of equipment directly from the defense industry.

The drawdown will provide artillery rounds that Ukraine is using to defend itself, as well as anti-armor systems, small arms, heavy equipment transport vehicles, and maintenance support essential to strengthening Ukraine's defenders on the battlefield, according to the Pentagon.
