Germany delivered Iris-T air defense system to Ukraine on Easter – Spiegel
On Sunday, April 16, Germany delivered the second of the four promised air defense systems IRIS-T (SLM) Ukraine.
Rubryka reports, citing Spiegel, that Ukraine received 16 guided missiles besides the air defense system.
It is unclear when the two remaining IRIS-T systems pledged by the German federal government will arrive in Ukraine, as they still have to be manufactured. The Iris-T SLM anti-aircraft complex consists of three machines: a launch pad on a military truck with room for eight missiles, a radar machine, and a main car. Anti-aircraft missiles can hit targets at an altitude of up to 20 kilometers and a distance of up to 40 kilometers.
Germany has committed to supply Ukraine with the IRIS-T air defense system, following pleas from Kyiv and German opposition parties to step up heavy weapons deliveries in June 2022. In September 2022, the German government pledged four systems.
The first IRIS-T system was transferred to Ukraine in October 2022. Egypt handed over the fire parts to Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Germany has pledged the military equipment supply and combat vehicles, including 30 GEPARD self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, one COBRA counter-battery radar system, 54 M113 armored personnel carriers, 10 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers, 3 MARS II M270 multiple rocket launchers with ammunition.
The federal government announced in its weekly update on Tuesday that it had delivered the Patriot air defense system promised to Ukraine in January. The coalition government of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, the Free Democratic Party, and Alliance 90/The Greens announced the delivery of the Patriot system at the beginning of January and the delivery of Marder armored personnel carriers.
