#StopEcocideUkraine campaign will hold worldwide rallies against Russia's environmental crimes in Ukraine

On International Earth Day, overseas Ukrainian communities and foreigners worldwide will unite to launch a global campaign, #StopEcocideUkraine, as part of the EcoUnity For Ukraine movement.

Rubryka reports that on April 21-23, people from all six continents will form a living chain of unity to draw attention to the environmental crimes committed by Russia during its war against Ukraine.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine has recorded more than 2,340 facts of Russian damage to the environment since the beginning of the full-scale war.

Russian forces illegally occupy 495,000 hectares of Ukrainian forests, and 2.4 million hectares are currently deoccupied and need restoration. Due to the war, 20% of nature conservation areas were affected.

The initiator of the EcoUnity For Ukraine rally is the UAnimals national humanist movement and animal rights organization.

Partners coordinated the #StopEcocideUkraine campaign:

  • Communities Army of Ukraine (CAU) public organization,
  • KLYCH community.

Three organizations have joined forces to try to involve the whole world in the fight against Russia's environmental terrorism against Ukraine. Ukrainian artist Andrii Yermolenko, who prepared thematic posters, also joined the campaign.

"Environmental crimes that the Russians are committing right now on the territory of Ukraine is a global problem, the damage of which future generations can feel all over the world," says Oleksandr Todorchuk, UAnimals founder. "On Earth Day, residents of London and Paris, Los Angeles and Yokkaichi, Sydney, and Nairobi, even Ukrainian polar explorers from the Vernadsky polar station in Antarctica, will join hands to protest the terrorist country that destroys all living things in its path."

Oleksandr Todorchuk adds that the EcoUnity For Ukraine action is also a call from the world to international institutions that should hold Russians accountable for environmental crimes against humanity and the environment.

"Due to Russian aggression, today we are losing our natural resources — forests, steppes, seas, and the animals and plants that live there," CAU representatives note. "Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is leading to climate change, and the environmental damage is already measured in a trillion hryvnias. Our nature will feel this war's consequences and effects for decades to come. We call on the world to immediately condemn the Kremlin's environmental crimes and stop the racist ecocide!"
