Russia passes law on life imprisonment for treason
The Russian parliament adopted a law introducing life imprisonment "for treason" and "an act of international terrorism."
The state-funded media TASS reported on the Telegram messaging app that the new law significantly strengthens responsibility for terrorism articles.
The article on treason in the Russian Federation provides an imprisonment term of 12 to 20 years.
After Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, cases of prosecution for treason have increased significantly. Such cases are almost always classified as "confidential," and the defenders are under a non-disclosure agreement, so information about the essence of the accusation becomes known only in individual cases.
