The specialized prosthetics and reconstruction clinic Superhumans will open this week near Lviv.

Rubryka reports, referring to the publication Zaxid.net., that the main task of the architects was to ensure that the building was barrier-free and accessible.

What is the problem?

The Ukrainian military is courageously defending Ukraine from the Russian invasion. Unfortunately, the soldiers suffer severe injuries during fierce battles when the enemy mercilessly strikes using all possible weapons.

After treatment, up to 82% of wounded and sick service members return to normal. This testifies to the success of the Military Medical Doctrine of Ukraine.

Since the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine acted as the initiator and developer of the Military Medical Doctrine of Ukraine, based on the Israeli principle.

"The doctrine states that all civilian hospitals during the war become military hospitals. This gave us a result: up to 82% of wounded and sick soldiers are restored to health," the President of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Vitalii Tsimbaliuk, explained.

However, not all civilian and military hospitals are built to accommodate those who have lost limbs.

What is the solution?

A rehabilitation center is being created in an existing hospital in Vynnyky — Yurii Lypa Lviv Regional Hospital of war veterans and oppressed. The clinic's focus is a personalized approach to body reconstruction, limb prosthesis, skin transplantation, and exoskeletons, powered by domestically manufactured state-of-the-art medical devices but also psychological support for patients. It will operate several departments, including surgical, traumatological, physical, PTSD, and a pediatric reconstruction department.

The founders are Ukrainian entrepreneurs Filip Hlushko and Andrii Stavnitser. The supervisory board of the clinic includes the Ukrainian president's wife, first lady Olena Zelenska. Supporters include rock singer Sting, actor and director Liev Schreiber, the British Virgin Group, and various American charities operating under the US Charities.

The main task before the architects was to ensure the accessibility of the building because it was not adapted for people with disabilities before.

The center's design, from the general plan to interior solutions, was carried out by the architectural studio Savytskyy Design and PeLe Engineering. According to Savytskyy Design Studio founder Mark Savytskyi, the entire building will be barrier-free.

"Indoor accessibility is 98%. For example, we raised large earth masses by 2 meters to level the terrain to make the entrance to the building barrier-free and universal," he said.

How does it work?

The Superhumans Center will have three blocks. The first is a prosthetics laboratory. Bionic prostheses will be made according to the patient's measurements.

The next block is the rehabilitation center itself, as well as the occupational therapy center.

"A place where everyday living conditions are completely recreated so that patients can learn to use prostheses in everyday life: starting from the kitchen, bathroom, and living room, and ending with a car that will stand in the yard specifically so that people can learn to sit in it again, drive, etc.," says the founder of the Savytskyy Design Studio.

The designers also arranged an area with a surface with different coatings for people with prosthetic legs to learn to walk on various surfaces (sand, grass, cobblestones, gravel).

A swimming pool was installed in the center both for medical and emotional benefits.

Media projections with landscapes from different parts of the planet will be broadcast on the wall.

"Our soldiers who will undergo rehabilitation will be able to do it, for example, against the background of the Ukrainian Crimea," says the founder of the Savytskyy Design studio.

When designing the Superhumans Center, specialists tried to work out design solutions that the institution would resemble a hospital.

"This center is about overcoming difficulties. We made the design calm but not stereotyped for medical centers. The light is not contrasting, it illuminates the right areas, but at the same time, it is not annoying," says Marko Savytskyi. "All navigation, like a door opening and call buttons, synchronized to patients' needs and physiological capabilities. Background music will be selected by psychologists, which will create a therapeutic acoustic design."

Savytskyi says the interior uses media installations and projectors to broadcast motivational videos. The reception will have a sculpture that humanizes prostheses and clarifies to the subconscious that prosthetics is not a sentence.

The furniture will also be convenient for people with prosthetic legs so that it is comfortable to transfer from a wheelchair.

Superhumans Center is a modern clinic for prosthetics, reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, and psychological support for war victims. Treatment at the clinic will be free.
