New military aid, free trade, and sanctions: Ukraine’s PM reports results of Canada visit

The visit of Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to Canada on April 11 and the meetings held there were productive and effective.

The Head of Government reported the Canada trip's results on the Telegram message app.

"Productive meetings with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, the heads of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, representatives of Canadian business circles and pension funds. We continue to work. We are attracting as much support as possible for our victory, reconstruction, and post-war development of Ukraine," Shmyhal stressed.

Government team Canada visit results 

• The parties made arrangements to update the Free Trade Agreement. The agreement opens up new opportunities for business and production facilities in Ukraine.

Canada and Ukraine also concluded an Agreement on Youth Mobility, facilitating travel and employment for young people from both countries.

Military aid

• Canada announced a new military aid package of 21,000 assault rifles, 38 machine guns, and more than 2.4 million rounds of ammunition.

"We're donating 21,000 assault rifles, 38 machine guns, and over 2.4 million rounds of ammunition. These arms will support Ukraine's fight to defend itself and to protect our shared values," Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand emphasized.

Sanctions against Russian Federation

"New sanctions. Canada introduced another package of restrictions against Russian legal entities and individuals. In particular, the Volga-Dnepr company, whose An-124 aircraft was blocked in Canada, came under sanctions. The next step is the confiscation of Ruslan and other assets and their transfer to the benefit of Ukraine," the Prime Minister wrote.

PM Denys Shmyhal was on a working visit to Canada this week. There he met with Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance of Canada, Chrystia Freeland.

The Head of the Ukrainian Government will also visit Washington (USA) to participate in the annual Spring Meetings forum held by the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.

In Washington, Denys Shmyhal will meet with US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin, US Commerce Minister Gina Raimondo, Finance Minister Janet Yellen, and the management of the IMF, the World Bank, and the European Investment Bank.
