The European Union funds the implementation of two hydrogen valleys in Ukraine's Zakarpattia and Odesa regions, the state's Hydrogen Council reports.

What is the problem?

russian shelling destroyed the Ukrainian energy system on a large scale.

Ukraine needs economic recovery of the country. One of the main tasks of reconstruction is the transition to renewable energy and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

"Green" hydrogen is a direction in which we want to be leaders, one of the state energy facility's CEOs said.

Unfortunately, the war prevented the development of "green hydrogen"

What is the solution?

Ukrainian Hydrogen Council notes that funds from the EU will be directed to research into the production of green hydrogen in the Zakarpattia and Odesa regions. According to preliminary estimates, at least 220,000 tons of hydrogen will be produced per year.

"The first two transborder Hydrogen Valleys in Ukraine will likely receive financial support for green hydrogen production research in Zakarpattia and Odesa regions. The valleys have the potential to install a 2.5 GW electrolyzer capacity and annually produce 220,000 tonnes of hydrogen," the report reads.

How does it work?

The hydrogen supply will be carried out through a gas pipeline in accordance with the plans for the European hydrogen infrastructure development.

"Receiving financial support from the European Union will help Ukraine accelerate its transition to renewable energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which in turn will contribute to the country's economic recovery.

This will also strengthen energy security and stability of Europe," the statement says.

Ukraine and Germany signed off a statement on the expansion of energy partnership for the "green" restoration and reconstruction of the Ukrainian energy industry.

The parties agreed to boost partnership in areas such as promoting the sustainable development of the energy sector and expanding the use of renewables, including wind, solar, biomass, hydropower, and "green" hydrogen.

The implementation of this project will allow Ukraine to build new economic relations with the EU countries. It is a real chance to stand on the same level as the developed economies of the world, having achieved energy independence.

The construction and operation of "hydrogen valleys" will form more than 300,000 new jobs. And taking into account the development of related industries – more than 1 million permanent jobs.
