Ukraine submits candidacy for joining UNESCO executive board

Ukraine will submit its candidacy to the UNESCO Executive Board for 2025-2029 and is preparing a dossier for the inscription of the cultural landscape of Chernihiv on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The Minister of Culture and Information Policy, Oleksandr Tkachenko, and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Emine Dzhaparova, stated this at a joint briefing with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, Ukrinform reports.

"We will continue to work on other dossiers (for inscription on UNESCO's World Heritage List – ed.) for tangible and intangible heritage. We are also happy to announce that we have decided to submit our candidacy to the UNESCO Executive Board for the next period, 2025-2029. We hope that our partners will support us," Dzhaparova said.

For his part, Tkachenko said that he plans to visit Chernihiv to start creating a dossier on the city's cultural landscape "to report what cultural heritage is in danger."

The minister also noted that he believes in the leading role of UNESCO in collecting funds to restore cultural heritage sites.

As reported, on April 3, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay arrived in Kyiv for a visit.

Tkachenko stated that the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy is considering presenting the centers of several more cities, particularly Chernihiv, to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

On January 25, the historic center of Odesa was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Through a quickening process, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee added Odesa's historic center to the World Heritage List under threat on January 25 in Paris. The Odesa City Council revealed that registering the historic center took about ten years, with Ukraine officially submitting the nomination file to the organization in October 2022.

From now on, UNESCO is safeguarding the various signs of multiculturalism in the city's boulevards, squares, streets, and seaports. Specifically, this includes the ensemble of Prymorsky Boulevard, Theater Square, Derybasivska Street, Hoholya Street, and the Sea Trade Port. The city and state are also under the obligation to sustain the area in good condition, prevent the appearance of disharmonious objects in the security zone, and keep the appearance of the streets as close as possible to the events of the 1917 Revolution.
