Ukrainian archeologists uncover remains of settlement over 4,000 years old in western Ternopil region

Ukrainian scholars discovered the remains of an ancient settlement near the village of Husiatyn, Ternopil region, in Ukraine's west. 

Suspilne reports that according to the preliminary estimates, it belongs to the ancient Trypillia culture, also known as the Cucuteni culture, that existed during the Neolithic–Chalcolithic archaeological age (c. 5500 to 2750 BC) and extended from the Carpathian Mountains to the Dniester and Dnieper regions, (modern-day Moldova, Ukraine's west and northeast of Romania).

According to Taras Vasylyk, director of the Husiatyn Museum of Local History, the ancient settlement was found in the Popivskyi Sad forest tract.

"I went to collect information about the spring in this location, and on the territory of a plowed field, I noticed fragments of dishes and a dwelling. According to the preliminary version, this is a Trypillia settlement. Paintings characteristic of this culture were found on the fragments of dishes. The remains of a dwelling, namely, pieces of clay smeared on wooden beams in those times, also testify that it may belong to the Trypillia culture," Vasylyk said.

He also noted that this settlement is not currently in the register of archaeological monuments, so the museum will submit an application to enter the ancient settlement into the register.

"We plan to invite specialists who study the Trypillia culture to continue the research and determine to which time of the culture these fragments belong."

Recently, Ukrainian archaeologists found the bone of a primitive animal on the territory of the Davnii Halych national reserve in the Carpathian region.
