Ukraine's allies committed to helping win the war and progress toward NATO membership – Stoltenberg
NATO allies are focusing their efforts on ensuring that Ukraine can win the fight against russian aggression. In the future, they will help Ukraine's armed forces move to Western standards, bringing the country closer to membership in the alliance.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated this today during a press conference on the eve of the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO countries, Ukrinform reports.
NATO chief assured that the alliance's position on Ukraine's bid "remains unchanged."
"Ukraine will become a member of the alliance," Stoltenberg said, adding that NATO needs to "ensure that Ukraine prevails as a sovereign independent nation in Europe."
According to Stoltenberg, the allies must urgently step up military and economic support to Ukraine to achieve victory.
NATO is also considering how it can develop a political relationship with Ukraine, and the alliance can help Ukraine implement reforms in institutional building.
"It is extremely important to continue to demonstrate that NATO's door remains open, as we'll do tomorrow when Finland will become a full member. As we do when we finalize the accession process for Sweden, hopefully, in the near future," the NATO chief said.
