Ukraine's prosecutor general investigating over 9,000 cases of atrocities committed during russian occupation of Bucha

russian invaders committed more than 9,000 war crimes in the Bucha district of the Kyiv region.

The prosecutor general's Office reports this on Telegram.

According to the prosecutor general of Ukraine, Andrii Kostin, "over 9,000 war crimes were committed in the Bucha district during the 33 days of occupation. Terrible numbers… More than 270 crimes per day. More than 1,400 civilians were killed. Many of them were tortured. 37 children were among the dead. 52 more children were injured."

During this year, Kostin emphasized, the prosecutor's office reported the suspicion of almost a hundred soldiers of the russian federation. Indictments against 35 have been sent to court. Among them was a colonel-general, commander of the Central Military District of the russian federation, who directly managed the seizure of the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions.

The prosecutor general noted that two russian servicemen were sentenced to 12 years in prison for illegal deprivation of liberty of civilians and looting.

In his opinion, "all these crimes are not a coincidence. They are part of the planned strategy of russia aimed at destroying Ukraine as a state and Ukrainians as a nation."

"We will not stop until all the organizers and perpetrators of war crimes are brought to justice.

Today, we are holding another round of discussions with international partners dedicated to building a network of comprehensive responsibility for international crimes," Kostin emphasized.

For reference:

The International Criminal Court has made the first move in the legal process to prosecute members of the russian political and military leadership, who are responsible for numerous war crimes committed by the russian military in Ukraine since the beginning of the fullscale aggressive war in February 2022. This is despite the fact that russia is not a signatory to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and thus their ruling has no legal force on russian territory. Nevertheless, the ICC has called upon the 123 state parties to arrest putin and/or LvovaBelova if they travel to any of the states which have signed the Rome Statute. Russian propaganda has responded to this with aggressive threats to any country that might attempt to arrest putin.
