EU summit supports creation of tribunal for russian war crimes
EU leaders have supported the idea of creating a legal mechanism to bring the russian leadership to justice for war crimes against Ukraine
The summit elso endorsed the "peace formula", proposed by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, who met the EU leaders via video link, EU Council's press service says.
The EU leaders are committed to ensuring full accountability for war crimes committed in connection with russia's war against Ukraine, including through the establishment of an appropriate mechanism for the prosecution of the crime of aggression.
"In this context, the European Council welcomes the agreement to create the new International Centre for Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine (ICPA) in The Hague, which will be linked to the existing Joint Investigation Team supported by Eurojust," the statement said.
The EU summit supported Zelensky's "peace formula".
The European Council once again condemned russia's invasion of Ukraine and recalled its unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state within its internationally recognized borders and the inalienable right to self-defense against russian aggression.
EU leaders welcomed the resolution of the UN General Assembly and declared their support for the "peace formula" of Ukraine's President. Volodymyr Zelensky called on partners to transfer weapons to Ukraine as soon as possible. He also singled out five factors that could delay Ukrainian victory in the war.
The EU called on russia to withdraw troops from the entire territory of Ukraine, return deported Ukrainians, including deported children, and stop creating danger at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
The Parliamentary Assembly voted to create a tribunal for the russia's leader and the self-proclaimed president of belarus, alexander lukashenko. The resolution on the legal and human rights aspects of russia's aggression against Ukraine states that the special international criminal court must be supported by as many states and organizations as possible.
On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for putin. In addition to him, the court allowed the russian commissioner for children's rights, maria lvova-belova, to be detained and prosecuted for crimes against Ukraine.
