Ukraine, UN hold talks on environmental threats of russia's war
Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets discussed environmental threats caused by russia's actions in Ukraine with Asako Okai, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and Director of the Crisis Bureau of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The Ukrainian parliament's ombudsman announced the meeting results on the Telegram messaging app.
"I emphasized the threats to the environment by russia's action. After all, the risk of an accident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant [russia occupied in March 2022] increases due to the lowering water level in the Kakhovka reservoir because of the actions of the aggressor country. Besides, the settlements where the Kakhovka reservoir is a source of drinking water supply may be without water due to the actions of the russians," Lubinets stressed.
The ombudsman noted during the meeting that russia's violated the right to proper living conditions and provoked problems in the field of business and children's rights. He also familiarized Okai and her delegation with the Commissioner's Office's structure and outlined its activities' boundaries.
"UN Assistant Secretary-General Asako Okai assured that Ukraine will continue to receive help and support from the world," Lubinets emphasized.
