Women To Ukraine NGO to hold 24-hour global conference about Ukrainian women amid war

This month, the unique world marathon by W2U (Women to Ukraine), called "24 Hours About 1325," will discuss the protection of the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian women amid the war.

What is the problem?

The full-scale invasion became a real challenge for gender equality in Ukraine, making women the most vulnerable to the consequences of military aggression. Women's participation in the prevention and settlement of armed conflicts affects the course of such conflicts and post-war reconstruction. It also directly affects women's rights and freedoms in Ukraine.

Women and girls in Ukraine are highly vulnerable to conflict-related violence, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation. Another challenge is the general masculinization and strengthening of traditional values through war. There are fewer female experts in the media. Women are usually portrayed as victims rather than independent subjects, and many topics are taboo and ignored.

What is the solution?

The W2U (Women to Ukraine) marathon will occur on March 27 and 28, 2023. The whole day, there will be a discussion of ways to protect and expand the rights and opportunities of Ukrainian women with live broadcasts at 1:25 p.m. in each of the time zones of the countries participating in the marathon. The studio in Kyiv will work all day, and Zoom rooms with experts worldwide will work 24 hours.

How does it work?

The conference will be devoted to updating the National Action Plan 1325, raising the topic of the inclusion of women, peace and security issues in the Ukraine Recovery Plan, as well as the impact of the war on women in Ukraine and abroad and the consequences for gender equality in the long term.

This conference aims to support and expand the rights and opportunities of Ukrainian women, thanks to the involvement of international experts in the discussion. In 24 hours, participants will be able to hear more than 65 speakers from 15 countries worldwide.

Among the speakers: Kateryna Levchenko (Government Commissioner for Gender Policy, Ukraine), Irene Fellin (Special Representative of the NATO Secretary General on Women, Peace, and Security), Oleksandra Matviichuk (Chair of the Center for Civil Liberties, winner of the first Nobel Prize, Ukraine), Vineta Kleine (Head of NATO Information and Documentation Center, Latvia), Marta Chumalo (deputy director and psychologist of the NGO Center for Women's Perspectives, laureate of the Swedish Olof Palme Award 2023, Ukraine), Kateryna Cherepaha (president of the NGO La Strada-Ukraine, Ukraine), Kateryna Ilikchiieva (Science of Law, associate professor, lawyer, Head of NGO Evolution of Success, Ukraine), Svitlana Babenko (associate professor, head of the master's program of gender studies with a double degree from Lund University, Sweden and Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Ukraine), Ksenia Bukshina (NGO Institute of Constructive Journalism and New Media, Ukraine) and other Ukrainian and foreign experts and others.
