Ukrainian film "Mavka" breaks box office record on opening weekend
Based on the play of Ukrainian poetess and playwright Lesya Ukrainka, Forest Song, the animated movie Mavka broke the box office record among domestic releases according to opening weekend results. In the first four days of release, it collected almost 25 million hryvnias.
Rubryka reports, referring to Film.ua data, that more than 189,000 tickets were sold for the picture throughout Ukraine.
For comparison, the Ukrainian film Shchedryk, released in early January and was also a success in the audience, gathered more than 84,000 viewers and 10.6 million hryvnias at the box office in eight weeks of release.
More than 20 countries bought the cartoon for showing in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and North America.
Film.ua studio signed a contract with NBCUniversal for the first time, according to which Universal Pictures Content Group acquired a complete package of rights to show Mavka in France and French-speaking territories.
The budget of the cartoon is UAH 187 million. Of these, State Cinema allocated UAH 49.5 million for the project.
