EU will train 11,000 Ukrainian troops by the end of March – Borrell

The EU military mission will train more than 11,000 Ukrainian servicemen by the end of this month.

Another 30 thousand Ukrainian troops will be trained by the end of this year, Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative, says.

"To win the peace, Ukraine needs to win the war." Borrell said.

Borrell stressed the EU must provide a new support package to Ukraine, which will allow for the immediate delivery of ammunition from the existing stocks, adding that he proposed a figure of €1 billion from the European Peace Facility. In addition, he said the EU must address increasing the defense industry capacity in order to continue supporting Ukraine and its domestic militaries.

"If member states receive guarantees they can replenish their stocks… because the European defense industry will ramp up its capacities, they would be more ready to help Ukraine," he said.

He hopes that his initiative will be approved at the planned joint meeting of the ministers of defense and foreign affairs of the EU on March 20 in Brussels. He also added that the EU prefers that armaments be carried out in Europe, but for urgent deliveries to Ukraine, shells can be purchased anywhere.

EU Ambassadors approved an additional €2 billion for the European Peace Facility. This decision sends a clear signal of the EU's enduring commitment to military support for Ukraine and other partners.
