Ukraine has taken major steps in fighting corruption - PM

Ukraine has made a big leap in the fight against corruption.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said this at a press conference in Kyiv, Ukrinform reports.

"I am convinced that Ukraine has made a rather giant leap in the fight against corruption," Shmyhal said.

He added that creating an effective anti-corruption infrastructure is currently being completed.

"The head of the Specialized anti-corruption prosecutor's office (SAPO) has been appointed; the SAPO is working; the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine is working and making decisions; the National Agency for Prevention of Corruption is working; the anti-corruption program and the strategy have been approved… We will appoint the head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine. All four heads of anti-corruption bodies will be appointed, enabling the entire infrastructure to work effectively," Shmyhal said.

He emphasized that it is important that both the government and society have zero tolerance for corruption. All decisions regarding people who might be involved or suspected of corruption are made quickly.

At the same time, he emphasized that discussing specific persons suspected of corruption could only occur after relevant court decisions.

The Prime Minister added that European countries were very interested in the Ukrainian experience with Diia (see below in reference – ed.) and state registers.

For reference:

The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, or SAPO, is an independent structural unit of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine. It is primarily responsible for supporting and overseeing criminal investigations launched by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU).

The High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine is a Ukrainian court established on 11 April 2019. Cases concerning corruption in Ukraine are to be brought directly to this court.

The National Agency for Prevention of Corruption or NAPC is a national anti-corruption agency of the Ukrainian government responsible for shaping and implementing anti-corruption policy while creating an environment conducive to corruption prevention.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, or NABU, is a Ukrainian law enforcement anti-corruption agency investigating corruption in Ukraine and preparing cases for prosecution.

Diia is a mobile app, a web portal, and a brand of e-governance in Ukraine. Launched in 2020, the Diia app allows Ukrainian citizens to use digital documents on their smartphones instead of physical ones for identification and sharing purposes. The Diia portal provides access to over 50 governmental services.
