Germany sends Ukraine nine Biber bridge-laying tanks
Germany handed over 9 Biber armored bridge-builders, which are based on the chassis of the Leopard 1 tank, to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Germany's Embassy in Ukraine reports this on Facebook.
"Germany provides comprehensive support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Armored bridge-builder Biber (in translation – beaver) is an engineering combat vehicle with the help of which combat units overcome rivers, anti-tank ditches, and other obstacles. Nine such vehicles have already been handed over to the Ukrainian military," the statement says.
Biber can unfold and collapse the 22-meter bridge, which consists of two eleven-meter elements, in a matter of minutes. Biber is based on the chassis of the Leopard 1 tank. Instead of a turret, it is equipped with a bridge erection system.
Unlike many similar engineering machines, the bridge is laid horizontally, leaving the contours of the machine small and unnoticeable. Thanks to modern technology, this machine can be operated by only two crew members.
At the beginning of March, German Chancellor Olaf Scholl said that Germany, together with its partners, will continue to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine both with weapons and from the point of view of training soldiers.
