Ukraine war film “Why” wins top prize at Spanish film festival

The documentary film about the war in Ukraine received an award at the international film festival in Spain. The co-producer of the film is Nadiya Kuguk from Lviv.

The 7th International Festival of Independent Film IbizaCineFest has ended in Spain, Rubryka reports.

The documentary "CHOMU" (Why) received a special award at the festival in the Fem-Cine category (a film focusing on women).

The tape filming took place in Poland and Ukraine, in particular in Lviv.

Almost 2,000 film works were sent for consideration by the directorate. 105 films were selected for participation in the festival, and only 12 of them received awards.

The film "CHOMU"(Why) is among them. En Buen Sitio Productions filmed the tape, Nacho Leuza is a director.

The film crew aimed to show the world the face of war through the stories, memories, and experiences of ordinary people, women whose destinies, lives, and dreams were irreversibly changed and destroyed by the war. Each of the heroines had to leave everything and run away in order to survive and save their children.

"This film impressed us all, both the critics and the jury, with its sincerity and emotionality. Deep feelings of loss, hopelessness, pain and the question that remains unanswered until now: why is this all happening," commented the director of the film festival, film producer Xavi Herrera.

Filming took place in a variety of locations: railway stations, trains, refugee camps, temporary shelters, churches, humanitarian warehouses, and shelters.

Even the sounds of sirens that sound in the film were recorded during one of the air raids that the film crew found in Lviv.

"I am very pleased that our film with Nacho Leuz received such an award out of a large number of contenders. For me, this is not just a film, but also an opportunity to tell the world the truth about the horrors of the war taking place in our country. And I am grateful to my Spanish colleagues for this opportunity.

Ukraine is not only cities and territories, it is, first of all, people who identify themselves with this country.
Despite the fact that the full-scale war has been going on for over a year, the world still knows little and does not really understand the situation from the point of view of Ukrainians.

If we do not tell the truth, the world will listen to what enemy propaganda tells instead of us. Each of us is a carrier of information and the face of Ukraine." Nadiya Kuguk said.
